Three-Dimensional Dynamics of Narrow Planetary Rings

چکیده

Narrow planetary rings are eccentric and inclined. Particles within a given ring must therefore share the same pericenter and node. We solve for the threedimensional geometries and mass distributions that enable the Uranian α and β rings, and the Saturnian Maxwell and Colombo (Titan) rings, to maintain simultaneous apsidal and nodal lock. Ring self-gravity, interparticle collisions, and the quadrupole field of the host planet balance each other to achieve this equilibrium. We prove that such an equilibrium is linearly stable. Predictions for the Saturnian ringlets to be tested by the Cassini spacecraft include: (1) ringlet masses are of order a few × 10 g, (2) surface mass densities should increase from ring midline to ring edges, and (3) rings are vertically warped such that the fractional variation of inclination across the ring is of order 10%. Analogous predictions are made for the Uranian rings. Simultaneous apsidal and nodal locking forces the narrowest portion of the ring—its “pinch,” where self-gravitational and collisional forces are strongest—to circulate relative to the node, and introduces previously unrecognized time-varying forces perpendicular to the planet’s equator plane. We speculate that such periodic stressing might drive kilometer-scale bending waves at a frequency twice that of apsidal precession; such flexing might be observed over a few weeks by Cassini. Subject headings: celestial mechanics — planets and satellites: individual (Uranus, α and β rings, Saturn, Maxwell and Colombo rings)

Strands and braids in narrow planetary rings: A scattering system approach

We address the occurrence of narrow planetary rings and some of their structural properties, in particular when the rings are shepherded. We consider the problem as Hamiltonian scattering of a large number of non-interacting massless point particles in an effective potential. Using the existence of stable motion in scattering regions in this set up, we describe a mechanism in phase space for th...

Dynamics of an oscillating bubble in a narrow gap.

The complex dynamics of a single bubble of a few millimeters in size oscillating inside a narrow fluid-filled gap between two parallel plates is studied using high-speed videography. Two synchronized high-speed cameras were used to observe both the side and front views of the bubble. The front-view images show bubble expansion and collapse with the formation of concentric dark and bright rings....

Numerical Simulation of Flash Boiling Effect in a 3-Dimensional Chamber Using CFD Techniques

Flash Boiling atomization is one of the most effective means of generating a fine and narrow-dispersed spray. Unless its complexity its potential has not been fully realized. In This Paper, a three dimensional chamber has been modeled with a straight fuel injector. Effect of Flash Boiling has been investigated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. A finite volume approach with the ...

Apse Alignment of Narrow Eccentric Planetary Rings

The boundaries of the Uranian ǫ, α, and β rings can be fitted by Keplerian ellipses. The pair of ellipses that outline a given ring share a common line of apsides. Apse alignment is surprising because the quadrupole moment of Uranus induces differential precession. We propose that rigid precession is maintained by a balance of forces due to ring self-gravity, planetary oblateness, and interpart...
